On November 17th, Mr. Gomez’s AP Calculus AB classes gathered together to celebrate friendships. Over the course of two weeks the class planned exactly what and where day they would have their friendsgiving. The options for what day they would have it were November 17th at 7 pm or December 1st at 7 pm. In the end both classes would pick the 17th of November. Then for the options of where to go the places were Edo’s, Coach Diner, Salsa Picante, Noches de Colombia, John’s of Arthur Ave, Panka, Telly’s Taverna, and Fogama.

Majority of the class decided to go to Edo’s, a popular hibachi place in Port Chester. Unfortunately due to the high demand of students wanting to attend the location had to be switched. This was due to Edo’s unfortunately being unable to hold a reservation of 27 people. Luckily, Gomez was able to find another hibachi place; Buddha to hold his classes’ first Friendsgiving together.

Although there were some bumps along the way, Gomez had a very successful first Friendsgiving with 14 of his students, himself, and his two daughters. For many of the students, this was their first experience with hibachi and overall the students really enjoyed themselves. Many of them ended up liking the new foods that they tried, a couple of them jumped in fear when the chef successfully lit up the teppanyaki (open grill).

The night ended with Mr. Gomez and a few of his students playing a joke on a student across the table. The group informed the restaurant that it was the student’s birthday and had everyone sing loudly in the restaurant while the student had a big look of shock on his face. After this, Gomez and his AP students calculated how to split the bill amongst one another and how much each individual student should tip.

Gomez is constantly reaching out to his students to ask for their opinions on certain topics like his desk arrangement and organizing events to celebrate his students, like this friendsgiving. Typically he holds an end of the year field trip to celebrate his AP calculus students completing their exam, but he decided it would be fun to hold more events throughout the year. In the end, this event was a success and everyone enjoyed their time together. Mr. Gomez plans to continue with fun events like this one with his senior classes, not only to celebrate them but also bring them closer together.
