On Thursday, February 1st, Port Chester High School’s chapter of the Mu Alpha Theta Honor Society hosted its annual STEAM Fest. The event took place in the school’s gymnasium and invited Port Chester elementary school students in grades 3-5. As the acronym suggests, this event is hosted to introduce STEAM-related subjects – science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics – to elementary school students in a fun and interactive manner.

After school, members of Mu Alpha Theta and National Honor Society volunteered to help organize the event. Various activity stations were set up around the gym and in nearby classrooms, each directed by 1-2 student volunteers.

Some of the stations included catapults, magnets, slime, cup stacking, coloring, binary code, airplanes, and the elementary school students’ favorite stations: the origami and drone stations.

The school received a great turnout, welcoming approximately 100 elementary students, as well as parents who showed just as much interest as their children. PCHS teachers also got to enjoy the fun as many of them visited and interacted with the children at the stations. Near the end of the event, parents found it difficult to get their children to leave the stations as the kids didn’t want the excitement to end.

Events such as these are organized to unify the Port Chester community and encourage academic interests in Port Chester’s youth.
