Now that the weather is getting colder it is that time of season. Thanksgiving is approaching which means it’s time to break out the turkey! But it wouldn’t be Thanksgiving without some accompanying dishes and desserts as part of the meal. In order to prepare you for the holiday season, The Port Light will be recommending some dishes from a variety of cultures which will range from sweet desserts to savory side dishes.

French Invisible Apple Cake

This cake recipe originates in France but has become very popular in Japan due to its smooth rich texture. The name comes from the thin sliced apple that is incorporated in the batter that almost makes the apples look transparent and invisible when it is baked. This pastry would be a perfect dessert for people who enjoy light and not so sweet treats.

Peruvian Donuts: Picarones

Picarones are donuts made of squash and originate in Peru. The dough when fried is crispy on the outside and lightly sweet and soft on the inside. When plated the pastry is covered in syrup made from chancaca which is unrefined sugar. The syrup has a concentrated sweetness to it and leaves a slight bitter aftertaste.

German Pumpkin Streusel

The streusel originates from Germany and is simply described as a yeasted cookie. This desert is on the sweeter side. It is covered in a sugar glaze and pumpkin puree. The cookie is recommended to people who enjoy sugary desserts with their meal.

Romanian Cabbage Rolls: Sarmale

Sarmale is a traditional Romanian dish that consists of beef or pork wrapped in marinated cabbage. The seasoned meat is blacked in a bed of cabbage and is steamed til fully cooked. Enjoy this dish with either a warm bowl of rice or polenta.

Butter Chicken Indian Cuisine

Butter Chicken is one of India’s most popular dishes. It consists of tender chicken and a rich curry sauce containing a range of spices and flavors. The dish typically consists of some chili as well.
