Jessie’s Girl talks music education at The Capitol Theatre

by The Port Light Staff

Music education is something that is very important to the Port Chester community. Beyond very important. It is ingrained in the identity of the community. The benefits of music and music education can not be stated enough. Studies have shown that music education can improve memory and concentration, and can even help build up social emotional development through teamwork and creativity. Most important, however, is it provides a safe and creative way for students to express themselves and discuss things that are stressors in their lives.

Having an opportunity to express this music education through events at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester is invaluable.

On Saturday night, November 29th, the band Jessie’s Girl brought their Back to the Eighties show to the Capitol Theatre. For those of you that have never heard of Jessie’s Girl, they are a group of singers and musicians that cover the music of the 1980’s. Their playlist includes music from some of the decade’s biggest and greatest acts. Bon Jovi, Madonna, Prince, Def Leppard, Elton John and The Buggles are some of the acts they cover.

The Port Light had the opportunity to sit down with two of its members to discuss why music education is so important in the lives of young people.

Destinee Monroe is a talented singer and songwriter. She has performed with some big names in the music industry like Brittany Spears, The Jonas Brothers and The Cheetah Girls. Music was and still is a very important part of her life. According to Destinee, “music education is important because it builds a foundation for all walks of life. It is its own language and it connects everybody no matter who you are, where you’re from, and how old you are.”

Eric Presti is the technical director for the band. He is also one of their guitarists. Eric has been involved in music his whole life. He has also performed with some big names in the music industry. Some of those names include M.C. Hammer, Taylor Dayne, Bret Michaels, Tiffany, and Rob Base. According to Eric, “Music education goes far beyond music; it teaches life skills. If you are a part of a band, orchestra or ensemble you are part of a team. You learn teamwork. Music education also provides a creative outlet and creates a more well rounded person.”

The Port Light encourages everyone in the community to check out Jessie’s Girl when they rock out in town, and keep up to date on the amazing events happening at The Capitol Theatre! Upcoming events include The Nutcracker and “Especially Everyone Winter Experience” for the holiday season, and Music of The Grateful Dead and Dave Matthews Tribute Band for some great music vibes.
